About the 1964.5 (aka 1964 1/2) Ford Mustang

About the 1964.5 (or 1964 1/2) Ford Mustang

1964 1/2 - A First Rate Introduction
"Lee Iacocca, Ford’s then General Manager, commissioned his design team to come up with a two seated roadster that would compete with popular European cars as well as the American Chevy Corvette Sting Ray. A design team headed by assistant manager and engineer Donald Frey was formed and the new project was titled the “T-5”. After some consideration it was agreed that a cross breed roadster and Ford Falcon would be more suitable to modern demands. After all, the Ford Thunderbird, which was Ford’s most recent two seater car, did not fair as well as expected in current car markets. The T-5 was given a new design commission and Lee Iacocco gives much credit to the efforts of stylist David Ash for making the renamed “Mustang” a smashing success.
In 1964 production was in high gear for the newly designed 1965 Ford Mustang. The highly anticipated Ford Mustang was honored by being named the Indianapolis pace car of 1964 and Ford stepped it up to accommodate the rising status of their new design. A special convertible version was adapted as the pacer. It was manufactured in white with a blue stripe on the hood and trunk. Ford also made 230 extra pace cars, available in convertible and hard top. The 64 1/2 convertibles had a 289cid engine, and the hardtops came with the less powerful 260 V-8. Thirty five convertibles were sold to dealerships and 195 hardtops were given out in dealer contests held in April of 1964.
Clearly the new Ford Mustang was suddenly everywhere! It was even featured in 1964’s Bond movie, Goldfinger! Yes, the Mustang was an instant hit! A true royal gem in Ford’s car making history. It was the most successful release Ford had made since the 1928 introduction of the Model A and it has stood the test of time. Ford is still continuing the Mustang line and even the newer Mustangs are a modern collectors item.
Although originally the Mustang was advertised as an early 1965 model, Ford made some changes to the later 1965 models that differentiated the two, and it is known today as the 1964 1/2 Mustang (1964.5 Mustang). Thus, the term 1964 1/2 or 1964.5 was eventually coined. What were some of the differences between the 1964 1/2 and 1965 Mustang versions? Read our 1965 Mustang page to find out!"

Good Fellaz Honors Navy Soldier with Marine Veteran Family

KOMU 8 News Coverage
KOMU 8 News Coverage:

IBERIA - A California army veteran got the surprise of his life in a small Missouri town more than 1,500 miles away.

Matthew Kuhl is on active duty in North Korea, but took a week off to visit his family in California. He also came to Missouri to pick up a restored Corvette he'd bought online.

He's leaving Missouri with more than just the Corvette.

When Kuhl was 14, he purchased a 1971 Dodge Dart Swinger to restore with his father. The car never got fully restored, but managed to get Kuhl through high school.

When he joined the military, he decided to have his father sell it.

“I was stuck with a decision to either bring the car to [Naval Air Station] Lemoore and use it as my daily driver, and any time I needed to go out of town I would have to put miles on it,” Kuhl said. “I didn’t want to treat the old ’71 Dart with the original seventy thousand miles on the original engine like that.”

Jim Kuhl, Matthew's father who also lives in California, told his son he sold the car, but instead sent it to Brad and Becca Berg in Missouri.

The Iberia couple restores classic cars.

“Every car has a backstory and touches us just a little bit,” Becca Berg said. “Everybody in their own way.”

The couple and their crew worked for 15 months to restore the classic car in time to surprise Matthew during his visit to Missouri.

Everyone in the Kuhl family knew about the restoration project, except for Matthew.

“He’s really hard to read,” Jim said. “I just can't believe we were able to keep it a secret.”

According to Jim, restoring the car for his son had significance to him as well.

Jim is a retired veteran. When he was overseas, his brother sold a car he was restoring. He said he did not want his son to go through the same devastation he had.

“Cars like this aren't what cars are to normal people, I would say,” Jim said.

“This is my first car. I did everything in high school in it,” Matthew said. “This is the car that made me.”
